چکیده

In aerosol chamber experiments optical properties of resuspended mineral dust samples of defined size distributions were measured. Extinction coefficients (bext) and mass specific extinction cross sections (σext) were determined for Saharan dust samples from different locations. The results for σext were not very sensitive to the type of dust and varied at λ=550 nm between 3.3±0.4 m2 g−1 and 3.7±0.4 m2 g−1. The absorption coefficients (babs) and mass specific absorption cross sections (σabs) were determined with a novel multiwavelength photo-acoustic absorption spectrometer (PAS). The single scattering albedo was close to 1 (0.98 to 0.99) at 532 nm and 1064 nm, but significantly lower (0.63 to 0.76) at 266 nm. Additionally the chemical and mineralogical composition of the dust samples were analysed with special regard to the iron oxide phases hematite and goethite. At λ=266 nm the mineral dust sample without any detectable iron oxides showed a significantly higher SSA compared to the sample with a hematite content of 0.6 wt-%.

Complex refractive indices of Saharan dust samples at visible and near UV wavelengths: a laboratory study

We have retrieved the wavelength-dependent imaginary parts of the complex refractive index for five different Saharan dust aerosol particles of variable mineralogical composition at wavelengths between 305 and 955 nm. The dust particles were generated by dispersing soil samples into a laboratory aerosol chamber, typically yielding particle sizes with mean diameters ranging from 0.3 to 0.4 μm an...

On the Information Content of Hyperspectral Infrared Observations with Respect to Mineral Dust

Desert dust is characterized by strong silicate absorption bands located within the atmospheric window region in the terrestrial infrared (TIR) between 8 μm and 12 μm. These absorption bands and the corresponding optical properties (extinction efficiency, single scattering albedo, scattering phase function) have very specific spectral shapes for different silicate minerals, modulated by the par...

Petrophysical and durability tests on sandstones for the evaluation of their quality as building stones using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)

Due to their widespread availability, sandstones are commonly used as a natural stone for buildings, monuments and sculptures. In thecurrent study, nine sandstone samples from the Upper Red Formation (specified by the letters A, B, C, CG, S, S1, Sh, Tr and Min)were studied from a petrophysical point of view and their durability was evaluated. Then, their suitability as building stones wasassess...
